ABOUT AMI

Featured Review

Early Years:

Ami was born on August 21, 1983 in Houston, Texas to Indian-born parents, Nitin Dalal, a businessman, and Kiran Dalal, a social worker. Ami spent her formative years as an expatriate child in international schools in Belgium, Singapore, and Venezuela. From there, she developed - among other things - a paradoxical comfort with being the outsider. Many of her works deal with this theme.

Education:

Ami studied international business at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She moved to India shortly after graduation to work first in a non-profit and later for a national newspaper, The Hindustan Times. She had spent many summers in India with her grandparents, and it was the only geographical constant in her life.  Ami was surprised to discover that she felt like an outsider again in the one place that she had expected to belong, and returned to the US after a year. She moved to New York and worked on Wall Street, only to witness its spectacular collapse by the year's end.

In 2009, Ami joined a joint master's program in Business and Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School and Kellogg School of Management. She considered joining the foreign service but ultimately returned to the business world, all the while nurturing her desire to pursue writing full-time rather than only in her spare hours and weekends.

It was only after the birth of her son in 2015 that Ami decided to publish her works online. She realized two things. One, that her son's entrance into this world officially marked him as the future and her as the past - and if she kept waiting for the "right time" to start, life would soon pass her by entirely. Second, that if she could write a surprisingly cogent short story in the forty-five minutes that he was napping, then she had wasted a lot of time waiting to craft the perfect story to be finished. It was now, or never.

Works:

Ami has studied creative writing at Harvard University, Stanford University, Northwestern University, and The New School under renowned authors Kirstin Valdez Quade, Amy Hempel, and Goldie Goldbloom. She has been writing for over a decade and her published works are now available at  the Amazon Kindle Store.

Ami currently lives in Houston, Texas with her husband, Arjun Ohri, and 1-year old son, Zayn.
